At the invitation of Erwin Eisch John traveled to Germany to meet with him, and John was subsequently accepted as his apprentice. It was in the basement studio of the Eisch glass factory that John James Barber first set foot on the road from apprentice to intricate decoration and assisting Erwin Eisch in the creation of his masterworks. Later Erwin was instrumental in helping John gain admittance to the celebrated State School for Glass Design in Zwiezel, Germany. Here John completed an intensive two-year apprenticeship program studying in depth the techniques of the European Masters.
In 1973 John returned to the United States and founded one of Southern California's first privately owned glass studios. He continued to research the off-hand glassblowing process, focusing his interest on the rediscovery of the lost techniques, which produces the breathtaking glass masterwork of the Art Nouveau period.

Beginning with Erwin Eisch and continuing for over a quarter century John has research the techniques of the Masters and in doing so has achieved that status himself. In European tradition an apprenticeship lasts 20 years and in 1992 John Barber at long last earned the right to sit at the Master's bench.
John Barber has recently released a series of limited edition designs each fully conceived and executed by the artist in his studio. Each piece is hand wrought from beginning to end one of a kind artwork with no pains spared to insure that each one becomes a creation of value and lasting beauty. They are available in limited quantities and are signed and dated by the artist as a testimonial to their lasting value and heirloom quality.
