John Barber will create three distinctive glass works of art in a style known as pate de verre, which means glass casting. This is one of the most unigue forms of glass rarely seen either historically or in contemporary work. Very early glassmakers used the technology of metal casting to cast glass and treat is as "poured stone." The works created in pate de verre have proven durability, and some museum works have survived 2,000 years. Barber will use this ancient technique to create a 32-foot long glass mural at the entrance of the property that will be visible from South Coast Highway. The mural will depict a graceful Laguna Beach landscape. He will also create two 46-inch tall illuminated urns that will be placed on pedestals near the property entrance. Barber has demonstrated glass blowing techniques at the Sawdust Festival for 24 years.
These beath-taking works of art will be placed at the Montage Hotel in Laguna Beach which is being built by the Athens Group. For more information about this Hotel, please email Chris Loidolt at cloidolt@athensdevco.com. Enjoy!
